Title:	Terms of trade, technical progress and economic growth Términos de intercambio, progreso técnico y crecimiento económico

Description:	Objective: We study, theoretically and empirically, the relationship between terms of trade and the growth rate of GDP per capita. Methodology: In the theoretical part, we develop a growth model with two sectors, primary (export sector) and manufacturing (import sector). We deduce the aggregated product of the economy. In the long run, terms of trade and the growth rate of GDP per capita are positively related. In order to contrast the theoretical result, in the empirical part, we apply time series analysis for Peru. Results: We show that terms of trade and the growth rate of GDP per capita are cointegrated for Peru. Limitations: The article only analyzes the aggregate relationship between terms of trade and the growth rate of GDP per capita. Originality: We study integrally (with theory and data) the relationship between terms of trade and the growth rate of GDP per capita for an economy that exports raw materials. Conclusions: For Peru, an exporter of raw materials, the terms of trade are a determinant of its economic growth. Objetivo: Estudiar, teórica y empíricamente, la relación entre términos de intercambio y la tasa de crecimiento del producto interno bruto per cápita. Metodología: En la parte teórica, se desarrolla un modelo de crecimiento con dos sectores, primario (exportador) y manufacturero (importador). Se deduce el producto agregado de la economía. En el largo plazo, los términos de intercambio y el producto interno bruto per cápita están positivamente relacionados. Con el propósito de contrastar el resultado teórico, en la parte empírica, se hace un análisis aplicado para Perú de series de tiempo. Resultados: Se muestra que los términos de intercambio y el producto interno bruto per cápita están cointegrados para Perú. Limitaciones: El artículo solamente analiza la relación agregada entre términos de intercambio y producto interno bruto per cápita. Originalidad: Se estudia integralmente (con teoría y datos) la relación entre términos de intercambio y producto interno bruto per cápita para una economía exportadora de materias primas. Conclusiones: Para Perú, exportador de materias primas, los términos de intercambio son un determinante de su crecimiento económico.
