| Description: | Type 1 diabetes mellitus is a disease characterized by theautoimmune response against pancreatic β cells, whichmanifests clinically as insulin production failure, with theconsequent alteration in glucose homeostasis. Since thismetabolic disease currently represents a globally growingproblem, different therapeutic approaches have been developedover time to stop the progression of the disease. One of them isstem cell therapy, which represents the cusp of treatments forthis pathology. This article aims to expose to the medicalcommunity the types and characteristics of stem cells used in atherapeutic way to control this disease, as well as the mostrecent advances about this promising technique. La diabetes mellitus tipo 1 es una enfermedad caracterizada por la respuesta autoinmune contra las células β pancreáticas, que se manifiesta clínicamente como insuficiencia en la producción de insulina, con la consiguiente alteración en la homeostasis de la glucosa. Dado que actualmente esta patología metabólica representa un problema creciente a nivel mundial se han desarrollado diferentes abordajes terapéuticos a lo largo del tiempo con el fin de detener la progresión de la enfermedad. Uno de ellos, es la terapia con células madre, la cual representa la cúspide el tratamiento.El presente artículo pretende exponer a la comunidad médica los tipos y las características de las células madre utilizadas de forma terapéutica para el control de la diabetes mellitus tipo 1, así como los avances más recientes en relación con esta técnica prometedora. |
