Keywords: substrates;tezontle;vermicompost;bokashi;algae;yield.
Publisher: UNIVERSIDAD DE GUADALAJARA
Description: With the objective of evaluating the effect of substrate mixtures (mineral and organic) and marine algae on the development and yields of bell peppers (Capsicum annuum L.) an experiment was conducted under greenhouse con- ditions at the Centro Universitario de Ciencias Biológicas y Agropecuarias in 2014-2015. The 12 treat ments used consisted of substrate mixtures with different percent- ages of the following substances: tezontle : coconut coir; sand : vermicompost; bokashi compost : soil:jal. A total of 120 “Orange Victory” plants supplied by the Enza Zaden Company were evalu- ated: 60 received an application of marine algae by “drench” follow- ing the recommendations of the commercial product Alga 600; as well as the witnesses. Algae were applied during transplanting and then every 15 days up to a total of 6 occasions. Treatments were distributed in a completely random design with 5 repetitions. An analysis of variance was conducted with comparisons of means using aTukeytest(p≤0.01),allwiththe NCSS statistical package. The vari- ables evaluated were: stem length and thickness, number of leaves, and yields. The highest values for stem length and thickness, and number of leaves were obtained on the 5th (February 2015) and 6th (March 2015) evaluation dates. The treatments that generated the greatest stem length and the highest number of leaves and yields were 70% vermicompost/30% sand/70% bokashi 20% soil 10% jal. The highest yield was pro- duced by the treatments with 50% sand 50% vermicompost and 50% tezontle 50% coir. For stem thickness, the treatment that generated the highest values was the mixture of 50% bokashi 40% soil 10% jal. The application of marine algae had no effect on the stem length, stem thickness, number of leaves, or yields of these pepper plants.
