Description:	The aim of this article is to propose a new reading of canonical texts on the concept of gender. That comprises fundamental proposals shown by authors like Sherry Ortner, Gayle Rubin, Joan W. Scott or Judith Butler, followed by their own critical self-revisions. The aim is questioning the historical construction of this concept that transitions as analytical category for social research from its normative connotation to a critical agency.To this end, firstly, the historical background of the concept is described. Secondly, it is identified the process of appropriation of the concept by feminist studies; thirdly, some of the most important meanings given to this term are indicated. Finally, as a conclusion, it is highlighted the existence of an area of conceptual tension between its critical capacity and its normative position. ResumenEn este artículo se plantea una relectura de textos canónicos sobre el concepto de género, que comprende las propuestas fundamentales de autoras como Sherry Ortner, Gayle Rubin, Joan W. Scott o Judith Butler y sus propias revisiones autocríticas, con el objeto de problematizar la construcción histórica de este concepto que se mueve en la investigación social como categoría analítica entre su acepción normativa y su potencial crítico. Para ello, en primer lugar, se describen algunos antecedentes históricos del concepto. En segundo lugar, se identifican distintas interpretaciones teóricas otorgadas a este término desde los estudios feministas. Finalmente, se constatan ciertas tensiones de género que subyacen de su capacidad crítica y acomodo normativo.
