Title:	Gender and empowerment: a life story told through the experience of teaching in San Luis Potosí, Mexico Género y empoderamiento: una historia de vida contada desde el magisterio potosino

Description:	Historically, teaching – like other professions associated with subservience – represented an opportunity for women to enter public life. However, such professions are culturally regarded as semi-professions due to their use of “natural” abilities such as motherhood or parenting. In Mexico, despite the fact that teaching is a feminized space, positions of power have been reserved for males, which lends itself to analysis to try to understand this phenomenon.  This qualitative research relies on the biographical method, one of whose tools is the life story. Open and in-depth formal interviews were used to analyze the teaching career of Rocio, who for more than a decade held important educational management positions, proving to be an atypical case of empowerment and a story that can be told from a gender perspective. Históricamente, el magisterio –a la par de otras profesiones asociadas al servilismo– representó una oportunidad para que las mujeres incursionaran en la vida pública. Sin embargo, culturalmente son consideradas semiprofesiones debido al empleo de capacidades “innatas” como la maternidad o la crianza. En el magisterio mexicano, a pesar de ser un espacio feminizado, los puestos de poder han sido reservados para los varones, lo que resulta ser un punto de análisis para tratar de comprender a qué se debe este fenómeno.  La presente investigación es de tipo cualitativo y parte del método biográfico, entre cuyas herramientas se encuentra la historia de vida. Se recurrió a la entrevista formal de tipo abierto y a profundidad, para analizar la trayectoria laboral de Rocío, una maestra que por más de una década ocupó puestos de alta gerencia educativa, que resultó ser un caso atípico de empoderamiento y que guarda una historia que puede ser contada desde un enfoque de género.
