Title:	The politics of the Anthropocene: progress and nature in the Sumidero Canyon La política del Antropoceno: progreso y naturaleza en el Cañón del Sumidero

Description:	Based on the author’s fieldwork as a tour guide in the Sumidero Canyon of the Grijalva River in Chiapas, Mexico, this article examines the conceptual limits and possibilities of the term Anthropocene. It shows how the concept helps to highlight issues concerned with a conceptual division made between nature and culture, but also how the breadth of the term and the reference to an epoch can lead to difficulties for anyone wishing to take local histories into account. The article concludes that the Anthropocene should be understood above all as a political concept, that corresponds to a broad change in the discourse that has occurred during the last decades, from the idea of progress to an emphasis on nature, and not as a descriptive term. Con base en el trabajo de campo del autor como guía de viajes turísticos en lancha en el Cañón del Sumidero del río Grijalva, en el estado de Chiapas, México, este artículo examina los límites conceptuales y las posibilidades del concepto de Antropoceno. Muestra cómo el concepto ayuda a resaltar cuestiones relacionadas con una división conceptual entre naturaleza y cultura, pero también cómo la amplitud del término y la referencia a una época conducen a dificultades para tener en cuenta las historias locales. El artículo concluye que el de Antropoceno debe entenderse ante todo como un concepto político, que corresponde a un amplio cambio discursivo que se ha producido durante las últimas décadas de la preocupación por el progreso a un énfasis en la naturaleza, y no como un término descriptivo.
