Description:	Respect for the human right to water and sanitation is vital for an integral development of the individual and in particular for members of society to be healthy and to be able to enjoy a decent quality of life. This article shows how neglecting the purity of drinking water can seriously affect the quality of life, and provides the example of a case study that was prepared for the Latin American Water Tribunal, in which it was found that the pollution of lake of Chapala is one of the factors affecting the health and economy of the local populations. As Chapala is the main water supplier to the Metropolitan Area of ​​Guadalajara, it can also affect the quality of life of the inhabitants of the city. El respeto al derecho humano al agua y el saneamiento es vital para el desarrollo integral del ser humano y, puntualmente, para tener salud y una adecuada calidad de vida. En el presente artículo se da cuenta de cómo el descuido en la calidad del agua potable puede llegar a afectar gravemente la calidad de vida. Se presenta como ejemplo un estudio de caso que se elaboró para el Tribunal Latinoamericano del Agua, en el cual se identifica que la contaminación del lago de Chapala es uno de los factores que afecta la salud y la economía en las poblaciones ribereñas. Es obvio que, siendo el lago de Chapala el principal abastecedor de agua del área metropolitana de Guadalajara, puede también llegar a afectar la calidad de vida de las personas que en ella viven.
