Description:	In this article, the problem of defining peripheries is presented in a general way. The aim is to present the reader with different theoretical and empirical perspectives on the subject, as well as to outline the basic assumptions underlying different analyses that have been made of peripheries. To this end, it is necessary to consider the historical aspect, the socio-territorial processes that occur in peripheral areas, local views of the different types of urban space, the diversity of the social actors taking part, and what shapes the heterogeneity that characterizes the peripheries. Three points are considered: the relationship between the city and the periphery, the diversity of the territorial processes involved, and the existence of several peripheries that go to make up a part of cities today. To conclude, a brief reflection is made on the relation of studies of peripheries to urban theory in the 21st century. En este artículo se plantea de manera general la problemática en torno a la definición de las periferias. El objetivo es presentar al lector diferentes perspectivas teóricas y empíricas sobre el tema, así como esbozar los supuestos básicos que sustentan los diferentes análisis sobre las periferias. Para ello se plantea la necesidad de considerar su aspecto histórico, los procesos socioterritoriales que se presentan en ellas, las miradas locales de los diferentes espacios urbanos, la diversidad de los actores sociales y que perfila la heterogeneidad que las caracteriza. Se consideran tres ejes: la relación entre la ciudad y las periferias; la diversidad de los procesos territoriales, y la existencia de varias periferias que conforman las ciudades actuales. Para terminar, se hace una breve reflexión sobre la relación de los estudios de las periferias con la teoría urbana en el siglo xxi.
