Description:	Se presentan algunas de las principales etapas de la historia de los estudios sobre la anatomía de las piezas genitales en los escarabajos, especialmente en lo que se refiere al uso de los caracteres genitales en la taxonomía, sistemática y filogenia del grupo. Se discuten también algunos aspectos teóricos de la evolución de las estructuras genitales. Finalmente, se formulan algunas consideraciones críticas sobre las actuales perspectivas de las investigaciones en taxonomía y sistemática.
