| Descripción: | El trabajo muestra la contribución más trascendente de la obra del navegante español José María Narváez Gervete en su quehacer de documentar y comunicar la geografía de Jalisco durante sus primeras dos décadas de vida independiente. Con su obra se generó el primer imaginario geográfico de la entidad, el cual perduró hasta la década de 1880. Fue autor del primer mapa de Jalisco, el cual destaca por los detalles y precisión con que fue elaborado; otros aspectos relevantes de su obra son los estudios y proyectos realizados durante los primeros años del siglo XIX, con la intención de sustituir por otro el Puerto de San Blas (Santiago, Navidad, Chamela, Bahía de Banderas, entre otros). Ya como navegante maduro, muchas de sus exploraciones y estudios los tradujo en planos, cartas y mapas que aún se pueden consultar y que son testimonio de su capacidad y destreza como geógrafo y cartógrafo. Otra arista quizás menos trascendente fue su labor política durante el gobierno de transición “español-mexicano”. The work of José María Narváez y Gervete. First geographer and cartographer of the free state of Jalisco (1767-1840) This essay shows the most far-reaching contribution of the work of the Spanish navigator, José Ma. Narvaez y Gervete, in his task of documenting and communicating the geography of Jalisco during its first two decades of independent life. His work generated the first geographic image of the entity, and this lasted until the 1880s. He produced the first map of Jalisco which stands out because of the detail and precision with which it was produced. Other relevant aspects of his work are the studies and projects realized during the first years of the 19th century with the objective of substituting for another, the port of San Blas (Santiago, Navidad, Chamela, and Bahia de Banderas, among others). As a mature navigator, many of his explorations and studies were transformed into plans, charts and maps which can still be consulted and which are testimony to his capacity and skill as a geographer and map-maker.
