Descripción:	This article focuses on an ongoing debate in the field of cultural studies. In this paper the concept of cultural studies is seen in relation to the teaching of German as a Foreign Language whilst also analyzing the experience of foreignness in the concrete example of relations between West Germany and East Germany. Furthermore, we discuss to what extent research and cultural transmission must be framed in this discussion as well as to what extent traditional research and transmission of cultural values and themes are differentiated in the present study. At the same time, the article questions the use of the term “culture”, especially in regards to its complexity, heterogeneity and the difficulty of defining it. This concept is seen as an interpretation of what appears to be an objective form of categorisation with which one makes sense of the world. An introduction to cultural patterns should provide an initial interpretation of the world and especially with regard to classifying categories, and particularly categorical, topological,chronological and axiological patterns. Finally emphasis is placed on the new challenges faced by Germanic studies in its original sense of literary philological studies, especially in regards to the integration of research and the teaching of cultural themes and values. Der vorliegende Artikel nimmt die derzeitige Diskussion im Bereich der Kulturwissenschaft ins Visier. Er setzt diesen Begriff in Zusammenhang mit Deutsch als Fremdsprache und analysiert weiter die Fremdheitserfahrung mit einem konkreten Beispiel zu West- und Ostdeutschland und diskutiert, inwiefern die Landeskunde in diesem Rahmen mit eingebunden werden sollte bzw. inwiefern sich diese von dem aktuellen Stand der kulturwissenschaftlichen Forschung unterscheidet. Des Weiteren wird die Problematik in der Verwendung des Begriffes ´Kultur´ in Frage gestellt, insbesondere in Bezug auf seine Komplexität,Heterogenität und Unübersichtlichkeit und schlägt ihn als Deutung dessen, was einem als objektiv erscheint, in Form von Kategorien vor, mit denen die Welt sinnvoll aufgefasst wird. Eine Einteilung in kulturelle Muster soll das Vordeuten der Welt mit Ordnungskategorien ermöglichen und zwar in kategoriale, topologische, chronologische und axiologische Muster. Schlussendlich wird betont, dass die Germanistik in ihrer herkömmlichen Version der philologischen Literaturwissenschaft vollkommen neuen Herausforderungen gegenübergestellt wird, mit besonderem Augenmerk auf die Integration der Landeskunde.
